Filming the break up scene

Today we filmed the break up scene. We tried incorporating different shots in this production, angle reverse angle shots and facial close ups were used as these shots show the emotions of the characters, important objects such as the door opening pannel are shown/exposed to show their importance in the scene.

Bandshots

First Shoot

After researching front page image, I thought it was time that along with the group we went up to the studio and took photos of our lead character to use for our ancillary tasks. As you can see from the shots below the quality of the photography was not good or efficient enough, as I cut off the arms of the artist or do not center them.
This was down to both the quality of the camera along with my unpolished photography skills, so from this session I decided that we would need to do another photo shot session. This time I would make sure to have a different camera and I will also have a test shot in preparation for this day.

Second Shoot

This photo shot showed that I have developed my photography skills, because I was able to get a good quality of images from this session, I was able to focus on the character.

Third photoshot

Whilst looking at more Digipaks to influence my research I came across Maverick Sabre's Lonely are the Brave album this album. This album attracted me straight away. When I saw it I just knew that's I had to recreate that so I went back for a third and final shoot the images above are the results of this photo shot.

Comparing my media text to existing media texts.

First draft
Looking at the existing media text that has been professionally created and comparing this to my first draft you can see that my final product has some missing elements and such as the editing and effects that have been applied to the image.

Media Theories

Goodwin stated that the 5 key aspects that the audience should look out for are:
  • thought beats (seeing the sound)
  • narrative and performance
  • the star image
  • relation of visuals to song
  • technical aspects of the music video
My group and I have incorporated Goodwin's 5 aspects into our music video in several ways.

Thought beats:

We have incorporated thought beats in our video by changing the shots to the beat of the music. This is evident in the scene where myself and Peter are walking in the woods.

Narrative and Performance:

We have made sure that we have included a narrative in our performance as the lyrics enabled us to do this. Quotes from the lyrics include 'and we don't know how you're spending all of your days' of which we used this as a piece of narrative to show theaudience the idea of loneliness that the character is feeling.

Star Image:

We have included the 'Star Image' in our music video too as we have made sure that our video not only shows a narrative but shows shots of our lead singer, Peter (the 'Star'), singing in a studio.

Relation of Visuals to Song:

We have also incorporated the relation of visuals to song by including images such as the image of me and Peter together and the image where I am setting alight a picture of me and Raja. This helps to show the audience what I am feeling.

Technical Aspects:

We have included the technical aspect of the music video by using different camera angles, different shots such as pans and tracks, finding the appropriate mise-en-scenesuch as a realistic cafe and editing the shots using transitions such as cross fades.

Researching Posters

Looking at existing material I was able to convention from real media products, these conventions included conventions, layout, house style, and font types. Analyzing layouts to work with, will enable me to be more creative knowing that the final product will be successful as it will emulate one with an audience already, and that it will already look professional. One of the most important factors when it comes to posters, is of course the product that is being advertised and so therefore the text needs to stand out for the poster to be attracted by a wider audience. I will emulate these conventions and use them in my product. They also make an effort to highlight the day it will be released to tell the audience when the product will be out, I will use this in my product. Without researching conventions, I would not have been aware the significance of putting the emphasis on the key words, and I quickly realized it is an integral part of the success of the final product.

They put a lot of emphasis on the image/brand of the artist making this appealing, they also make sure that image is appealing because people may like the and buy it. According to Gaze Theory people do things because they want to be like.

Editing time

Since filming last in December 2011, Me, Lisa and Raja have had taken it turn to edit the footage we got from the filming sessions from the half term. We have decided to go in to the editing suite separately as we all have different views on how things should be done so going in individually will allow us to apply our individual ideas and then pitch them to the group, this also allows us to edit faster, as we do not have a lot of time before our first deadline in March. Although this deadline is 6weeks away that's not a lot of time especially as we have other subjects and part time jobs to include and also we will need to plan before hand should we need to film again for the same shot.  We have agreed to how ever all look at the video together at least once a week and give feedback.

Research into imagery- R&B and Pop genre

Looking at existing R&B and Pop

Looking at these images taken for existing products they're all taken under studio lighting. Using studio lighting allows the photographers to control how much lighting the artist/character is exposed to. Using a studio also allows the photographer and editors to change  the background easily and add effects easier than if the image was done inside.

Revising other work we had done

As we had just lost our lead singer we had to revise our timeline, as we would have to make alterations to what we can expect to complete. Changing the lead singer also meant that we would have to reshoot footage that we had already filmed in order for us to create respectable product, this means that everything needs to be consistent.
Revised timeline

Recasting of lead role.

During the weeks leading up to the festive holidays, we found that our lead singer (Kyle Legg) was not going to be around during the time we needed to do the filming, as we did not want to lose time waiting for him to come back we decided to recast the role. As a group decision we decided to chose Peter Pierie.

As a group we chose Peter because we thought that he was a good substitute for Kyle, and most importantly he would be availble at all times we needed to do any filming.
